My oversized home…

Inasmuch as I really dislike the thought of it, it has come to the time that I must move out of my big Florida homestead, to seek out a smaller and more manageable home in which to work on.

Affectionately referred to as “the Plantation” by caring family, friends, and neighbors, the sheer size of the house, taking care of the large property (not to mention paying property taxes on this immense tract of land), and other considerations have become far too much for me to handle any longer.

Having put out a number of “feelers” for finding a new (or older, well-maintained pre-owned), smaller, more intimate and manageable home in which to reside, my thoughts are now consumed by what tasks I have in front of me while still in residence here.

As it stands, I have three of my four bedrooms full of large boxes completely filled with things as well as several pieces of unused furniture. As I’ll be looking to make a pretty well coordinated “new start” in my new location, most everything I have packed and stored in these rooms will soon be put up for sale, given away, or donated to any number of worthy causes and associations in my area (Goodwill and Salvation Army have immediately come to mind, and they’ll come by to pick up donated items).

My initial thinking is to put out on the market some of the bigger, higher-priced items, items such as:

  • Sofas (2)
  • Large Screen TVs (3)
  • Grand Piano
  • 4-Poster Bed
  • Bunk Beds
  • Dining Room Table and Chairs
  • Billiard Table
  • Entertainment Center

I figure that I could advertise some of the goods in the local newspapers, both in print and online. Taking it a bit wider in scope, I may look into posting many items on such sites as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Craigslist, and a few others.

I’ll take good photos of each item for sale, provide a clear description of each (condition, age of the item, a price (negotiable, or best offer)), and let the ads run for about a month or so. If I sell them, that’d be great. If there are some items that don’t move, I’ll just bring them along with me to my new home, putting them in my basement (one of my prerequisites for the home I hope to be soon purchasing).

I suppose my final ‘act’ in selling some of my things will be to host a two-day yard sale and barbecue/picnic for all my dear friends and family. We can sell some goods then, and kind of “go out in style” with a nice weekend that we can all look back on and fondly remember.
